DATE CHANGE! Godless Perverts Book Club: The Technology of Orgasm

November 17, 2017 by Godless Perverts

DATE CHANGE! This event is now on Friday, Nov. 17!

Godless Perverts Book Club is reading The Technology of Orgasm: “Hysteria,” the Vibrator, and Women’s Sexual Satisfaction by Rachel P. Maines. Friday, November 17, at Borderlands Cafe in SF. All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome. Please join us!

From the time of Hippocrates until the 1920s, massaging female patients to orgasm was a staple of medical practice among Western physicians in the treatment of “hysteria,” an ailment once considered both common and chronic in women. Doctors loathed this time-consuming procedure and for centuries relied on midwives. Later, they substituted the efficiency of mechanical devices, including the electric vibrator, invented in the 1880s. In The Technology of Orgasm, Rachel Maines offers readers a stimulating, surprising, and often humorous account of hysteria and its treatment throughout the ages, focusing on the development, use, and fall into disrepute of the vibrator as a legitimate medical device.

The Godless Perverts Book Club is at Borderlands Cafe, 870 Valencia St. in San Francisco. That’s on Valencia at 20th: it’s near the 24th and Mission BART, and it’s close to the parking garage on 21st and Bartlett between Valencia and Mission. Friday, November 17, 6:00 to 8:00 pm. It’s free: we ask that you buy food and/or drink to support the cafe if you can — and tip the cafe staff generously — but we understand that cafe prices are prohibitive for some people, so please don’t let that stop you from attending. We will be meeting at a large table in the back of the cafe.

All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome. Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality. And the sex-positive/ alt-sex/ whatever- you- want- to- call- it community isn’t always the most welcoming place for non-believers. So please join us!

Godless Perverts presents and promotes a positive view of sexuality without religion, by and for sex-positive atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other non-believers, through performance events, panel discussions, social gatherings, media productions, and other appropriate outlets. Our events and media productions present depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities — including positive, traumatic, and complex experiences — focusing on the intersections of sexuality with atheism, materialism, skepticism, and science, as well as critical, questioning, mocking, or blasphemous views of sex and religion.

Godless Perverts is committed to feminism, diversity, inclusivity, and social justice. We seek to create safe and welcoming environments for all non-believers and believing allies who are respectful of the mission, and are committed to taking positive action to achieve this. Please let the moderators or other people in charge of any event know if you encounter harassment, racism, misogyny, transphobia, or other problems at our events.

What is Purity Culture??

July 24, 2017 by Ember Atwell

(c) Can Stock Photo / stryjek

Godless Perverts’ upcoming Impurity Ball is a parody of “Purity Balls” staged by conservative evangelical Christians. A Purity Ball is a formal event involving classical music, little girls doing ballet in front of giant crosses, and fathers vowing to protect their daughters’ chastity until they marry. In contrast, an Impurity Ball is a celebration of sexual freedom. It includes dancing, cheesy prom photos, and the opportunity to stand under a canopy made of riding crops and pledge to be a conscientious hedonist.

I’m biased, but I think we’ve got the better agenda.

Godless Perverts Social Club in Oakland! Discussion Topic: Sex, Politics, and Religion

September 15, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in our wonderful downtown Oakland location on Thursday, September 15! Our discussion topic for this evening: Sex, Politics, and Religion. As the 2016 election enters its closing months, the intersections of sex, politics, and religion are more visibly volatile than ever. Come join us for a discussion about current events and how secular progressives can respond with solutions that aren’t based on religion, misogyny, or sexual stigma.

Some of the important issues we’ll be talking about include:

* Proposition 60: Should porn actors have to wear condoms and other protection on set? At first glance, it sounds good, but this proposed law has been broadly opposed by adult actors and models throughout the industry, even those who already work with condoms in all scenes.
* Pre-exposure prophylaxis: New drugs may allow prevention of HIV/AIDS by taking medication before unprotected sex. There are exciting possibilities, but some organizations are opposed. Are there reasons for opposing this treatment, or is it just old-fashioned slut-shaming?
* The HPV vaccine has shown remarkable success in reducing rates of cervical cancer. And yet, ten years after it was first approved, many parents are vocally opposed to letting their children get the vaccine, claiming that it will encourage sexual activity.

The Social Club will be on Thursday, September 15, 7-9 pm, at Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe, 1805 Telegraph Avenue, next to the Fox Theater (and right near the 19th St. Oakland BART station). Rudy’s Can’t Fail is a fun, friendly space that serves meals, small bites, beer, cocktails, soft drinks, and desserts. We’re meeting in the back room/ dining car, which is ridiculously cute: the dining car has somewhat limited space, probably enough for all of us, but it’s a good idea to arrive on time if you want to be sure to get a seat. Admission is free, although we do ask that you buy food and/or drink at the venue if you can. The Oakland Social Clubs are on the third Thursday of the month (First Tuesdays are still in San Francisco at Wicked Grounds.)

Hang out with other nonbelievers and chat about sex, sexuality, gender, atheism, religion, science, social justice, pop culture, and more. All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome.

Godless Perverts presents and promotes a positive view of sexuality without religion, by and for sex-positive atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other non-believers, through performance events, panel discussions, social gatherings, media productions, and other appropriate outlets. Godless Perverts Story Hour in SF, Saturday August 27!

August 27, 2016 by Greta Christina

We have a Godless Perverts Story Hour coming up in San Francisco on Saturday, August 29! The Story Hour is the performance/ entertainment/ literary reading branch of the Godless Perverts empire — we’ll be bringing you depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities, as well as critical, mocking, and blasphemous views of sex and religion. And we’re very excited to be bringing in an out-of-town performer — Heina Dadabhoy!

Heina Dadabhoy

Heina Dadabhoy spent their childhood as a practicing Muslim who never in their right mind would have believed that they would grow up to be an atheist feminist secular humanist and a pansexual genderqueer switch to boot. Heina has been an active participant in atheist organizations and events in and around Orange County, CA since 2007, and on the national stage since 2011. You may have heard them at Skepticon, the American Atheists National Convention, the Huffington Post Live, and Have Your Say on the BBC World Service or read about them in the New York Times.

Our other readers and performers for the evening include Donna Jay, Juba Kalamka, Ember Atwell, Michaela Goldhaber, and co-hosts Greta Christina and Chris Hall.

Juba Kalamka 100 Ember Atwell 100 Michaela Goldhaber Greta Christina 100 Chris Hall 100

So please join us at the for an evening about how to have good sex without having any gods, goddesses, spirits, or their earthly representatives hanging over your shoulder and telling you that you’re doing it wrong. The evening’s entertainment will have a range of voices — sexy and serious, passionate and funny, and all of the above — talking about how our sexualities can not only exist, but even thrive, without the supernatural.

The event is at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, near Civic Center BART. Admission is a sliding scale, $10-$20, with no-one turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds go to the Center for Sex and Culture. Hope to see you there!

Godless Perverts Social Club April 5: What Do We Mean By Sex? Sex, Language, and Inclusivity

April 5, 2016 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club on Tuesday, April 5! We have a specific discussion topic this time: What Do We Mean By Sex? Sex, Language, and Inclusivity. Overly narrow definitions of sex can leave queers and kinky people out in the cold. Overly broad ones can do the same for asexual people. Religion and science have both tried to define and control sexual language, to the detriment of pretty much everyone. How can we support people’s right to self-definition, and still communicate coherently? How do we accept the ways that language evolves naturally, without letting it be controlled by the majority? Is there a difference between language and labels? Come to the Godless Perverts Social Club for a friendly and vigorous discussion of how we talk about sex.

Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality. Hang out with other nonbelievers and chat about sex, sexuality, gender, atheism, religion, science, social justice, pop culture, and more. All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome.

We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at Wicked Grounds, 289 8th Street at Folsom in San Francisco (near Civic Center BART). (We also meet on the third Thursday of every month at Rudy’s Can’t Fail in downtown Oakland.) 7-9 pm. Admission is free, although we do ask that you buy food and/or drink at the venue if you can: Wicked Grounds has beverages, light snacks, full meals, and milkshakes made of literal awesome sauce.

Godless Perverts Social Club in Oakland, Thursday Sept. 17! Discussion Topic: Sex Work and the Law

September 17, 2015 by Greta Christina

The Godless Perverts Social Club is in Oakland at Telegraph Beer Garden (2318 Telegraph Ave.) on Thursday, September 17! And for this meetup, we have a specific discussion topic: Sex Work and the Law. With the recent shutdown of Rentboy.com by the Department of Homeland Security, and with Amnesty International’s recent statements that sex workers’ right are human rights and that sex work should be decriminalized, legal and ethical issues about sex work are being hotly debated. Do laws against sex work protect sex workers — or hurt them? What’s the result when laws and policies about sex work are written without the participation of sex workers themselves? How can laws and policies about sex work be written in a way that’s actually effective in shutting down down non-consensual sex trafficking, while protecting adults’ right to engage in consensual sexual activity? What role does religion play in these conversations — and what can the secular community bring to the table?

Kristina DolginThe discussion will be led by Kristina Dolgin, a long-time sex worker and lawyer. She is the founder of Red Light Legal, a new Oakland-based nonprofit that provides direct legal services, legal representation, community education, and policy advocacy to people working in the sex industry. Kristina advocates to reduce the stigma, discrimination, and violence associated with the sex industry, particularly for those who face intersectional oppressions due to racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and classism.

We are very excited that the Godless Perverts empire is stretching its tendrils into the East Bay! This Godless Perverts Social Club will be on Thursday, September 17, 7-9 pm, at Telegraph Beer Garden. Telegraph is located at 2318 Telegraph Ave., between 23rd St & 24th Streets in Oakland: it’s about a ten-minute walk from the 19th Street Oakland BART station, and is close to several bus lines.

How to Find Us

We’ll be meeting in the back room behind the bar, so we’ll have a separate, somewhat private-ish space to talk about sex and blasphemy and whatnot. Telegraph has lots of food options, mostly in the sandwich/ sausage/ burger family, and including many vegetarian and vegan options. They have a wide selection of beers, and they also have soft drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol. (It is a bar, which means you need to be at least 21 to attend.) Admission is free, but we ask that you buy food and/or drink if you can.

Godless Perverts Social Club, Thursday July 16: After Marriage Equality, What’s Next?

July 16, 2015 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club on Thursday, July 16! We’re picking a discussion topic ahead of time — and this time, the topic is After Marriage Equality, What’s Next?

Marriage equality is now legal across the U.S. So what’s next for sexual and gender politics? In the fight for secular sexual liberation and against the religious right, what issues should be our priority? Should we be focusing on transgender rights, employment and housing discrimination, homelessness among LGBT teens? Should polyamorous marriage be on the table? How shall queer communities face the problems of racism and classism? And how can atheists and skeptics support the fight for secular, evidence-based policies about gender and sex?

The Godless Perverts Social Club meets on the first Tuesday and the third Thursday of every month. Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts.
