Godless Perverts Story Hour in SF, Saturday August 27!

August 27, 2016 by Greta Christina

We have a Godless Perverts Story Hour coming up in San Francisco on Saturday, August 29! The Story Hour is the performance/ entertainment/ literary reading branch of the Godless Perverts empire — we’ll be bringing you depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities, as well as critical, mocking, and blasphemous views of sex and religion. And we’re very excited to be bringing in an out-of-town performer — Heina Dadabhoy!

Heina Dadabhoy

Heina Dadabhoy spent their childhood as a practicing Muslim who never in their right mind would have believed that they would grow up to be an atheist feminist secular humanist and a pansexual genderqueer switch to boot. Heina has been an active participant in atheist organizations and events in and around Orange County, CA since 2007, and on the national stage since 2011. You may have heard them at Skepticon, the American Atheists National Convention, the Huffington Post Live, and Have Your Say on the BBC World Service or read about them in the New York Times.

Our other readers and performers for the evening include Donna Jay, Juba Kalamka, Ember Atwell, Michaela Goldhaber, and co-hosts Greta Christina and Chris Hall.

So please join us at the for an evening about how to have good sex without having any gods, goddesses, spirits, or their earthly representatives hanging over your shoulder and telling you that you’re doing it wrong. The evening’s entertainment will have a range of voices — sexy and serious, passionate and funny, and all of the above — talking about how our sexualities can not only exist, but even thrive, without the supernatural.

The event is at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, near Civic Center BART. Admission is a sliding scale, $10-$20, with no-one turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds go to the Center for Sex and Culture. Hope to see you there!

Why We’re Supporting St. James Infirmary for the Holidays

We may be Godless, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t know how to party. For the last two years, we’ve helped the non-believer community celebrate the winter holidays in a secular fashion by holding the Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time, a social event complete with icebreaker games, weird songs, and decadent desserts. We’re having it at Borderlands Café this year, a magnificent community space, and we’ve got a lot of great uses planned out for it.

We’ll have our usual silly icebreaker games, goofy but fun holiday songs (Walt Kelly’s “Deck Us All With Boston Charlie” is a perennial favorite), delicious potluck holiday treats (bring your favorite to share – we will!), and the pleasure of connecting with our fellow secularists. And this year, Greta’s going to be giving openly fraudulent Tarot card readings! She’s almost completely guaranteed not to tell your future (except by accident), but it’s just as sure to be a great deal of fun. It’ll be on Saturday, December 12, 8-11 pm, at Borderlands Café, 870 Valencia St. in San Francisco, near the 24th St. & Mission BART station.

This year, as you may know, we’re doing it a little bit differently. The Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time is not only going to be fun, but it’s going to be a fundraiser for an organization that we’ve admired for a long time: The St. James Infirmary.

To do that, we’re trying to raise $700 to pay for space rental, refreshments, and assorted expenses of this year’s party. We’re almost just over halfway there, thanks to the generosity of some of you. As we get closer to our goal, we thought that it would be a good time to talk about the organization that we’re supporting this year, and why we think that they’re so awesome.

Godless Perverts Story Hour, Saturday August 29!

August 29, 2015 by Greta Christina

SF Atheists and Godless Perverts team up to bring you back-to-back events!

And we’re very excited to be bringing in an out-of-town performer — Bridgett Crutchfield, President of Black Nonbelievers of Detroit! Bridget is speaking to San Francisco Atheists in the afternoon (3:30 pm), and participating in the Godless Perverts Story Hour in the evening (7:00 pm). Both events are at the Women’s Building in the Audre Lorde room, 3543 18th St. in San Francisco (between Valencia and Guerrero), near the 16th & Mission BART station.

Bridgett Crutchfield

Bridgett Crutchfield

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bridgett (known as ‘Bria’) was raised, baptized and disfellowshipped from Jehovah’s Witness faith. She segued to Pentecostal Christianity and assumed leadership roles as Prophetess, Intercessory Prayer Warrior and Evangelist. After thoughtful reflection and finally being honest with herself, Bria realized she was an Atheist. In 2011, she Founded Minority Atheists of MI, and founded Detroit affiliate of Black Nonbelievers in 2013. Bridgett has a heart for newly identified Atheists and those who’ve been hurt within the secular community.

So please join us at the Women’s Building for an evening about how to have good sex without having any gods, goddesses, spirits, or their earthly representatives hanging over your shoulder and telling you that you’re doing it wrong. This is a joint event, co-sponsored by Godless Perverts and San Francisco Atheists. Bridgett Crutchfield will be speaking to San Francisco Atheists in the afternoon (3:30 pm), on “So You Wanna Be An Ally? How to engage the African American community with sensitivity, forethought, and compassion in the face of opposition, oppression and racism.” The Godless Perverts Story Hour is happening in the evening (7:00 pm). Both events are at the Women’s Building in the Audre Lorde room, 3543 18th St. in San Francisco (between Valencia and Guerrero), near the 16th & Mission BART station. (Yes, that’s right — we’re NOT at the Center for Sex and Culture this time, we ARE at the Women’s Building.) Suggested donation for the afternoon San Francisco Atheists event is $5, with no-one turned away for lack of funds. Suggested donation for the Godless Perverts Story Hour is $10-20 — again with no-one turned away for lack of funds. We hope to see you there!

Godless Perverts Social Club: Sex and Secular Mindfulness

December 18, 2014 by Godless Perverts

For December’s Topical Thursday, the Godless Perverts Social Club is going to discuss secular meditation and sexuality.

Meditation and mindfulness techniques have been taught in religious settings for thousands of years. But
now they’re being researched and taught in entirely secular, evidence-based settings. How can meditation and mindfulness work for atheists? And how can these techniques and philosophies be applied to sex?

Greta Christina will be moderating the discussion.

Godless Perverts Story Hour: Greta Christina, “To Give Itself Pleasure”

February 10, 2014 by Chris Hall

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series FTBCon2: Godless Perverts Story Hour

On February 1, we had our first Godless Perverts Story Hour of 2014, and it was really a great way to start out the new year.

There is not even the slightest ambiguity about that. A little over a week later, all three of us are still a little bit exhausted, a little bit glowing, and maybe even a little bit bewildered that we managed to pull it off at all, but there is no doubt that it was a great experience, and we’re all a little more optimistic about what we can do with Godless Perverts.

What was so great about it? Not only did we have an exceptional lineup of readers, but for the first time ever, we broadcast it live over the Internet, as part of the online atheist conference FTBCon2, which was pretty remarkable in itself. I think I can speak for my colleagues in Godless Perverts, Greta Christina and Dave Fitzgerald, when I say that it was a real honor to be part of it.

For those of you who couldn’t join us either in person or virtually, or who just want to relive the glory of that evening, we’re going to be posting video of the performers doing their reading over the next week and a half. That’s seven readers, plus a Q&A at the very end. Thank you so much to everyone who helped us out in this. [Read more…]
